I write historical speculative fiction with diverse characters: historical fantasy, alternate history, and retrofuture science fiction. Friendship, romantic friendship, and romance often occur in the stories. I usually write original fiction, though once in a blue moon my Muse will allow me to write litfic. More about me at my website and more about me at Fanlore. If you're seeking a specific type of story, check the story tags at my website.

I'm a member of the disability, lgbtq, mental health, and simple living communities. (For sake of clarification, I am not a member of the POC community. I list that that keyword in my Interests because many of my characters are people of color.) My life centers on writing, historical research, and homemaking for myself and my apprentice, who lives with me. My preferred pronouns: they/their/them.

I post story announcements here weekly, as well as entries about my life. I also post the occasional story recommendation.

MY WRITINGS

Turn-of-the-Century Toughs is a cycle of diverse alternate history series about adults and youths on the margins of society, and the people who love them. Set in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novels and stories take place in an alternative version of America that was settled by inhabitants of the Old World in ancient times. As a result, the New World retains certain classical and medieval customs.

The Three Lands is a diverse fantasy series on friendship, romantic friendship, romance, and betrayal in times of war and peace. The series is inspired by conflicts between nations during the Roman Empire and the Dark Ages.

Archived series and online nonfiction.

THE SUSAN RULES (not scary! not scary!)

As posted by author Susan R. Matthews on 23 June 2007 at HisExcellency, a fan e-mail list devoted to her science fiction. Reprinted with her permission because I thoroughly agree. --DP

The Susan Rules of Engagement, or How I Expect People to Behave In This Group . . .

(1) Critical remarks about something I've said in my novels or said in this group are not personal insults, and I don't take them as such.

(2) Differences of opinion with other people or with the text are not personal insults either, and should not be taken as such (I don't).

(3) Intelligent, articulate, insightful people (like those who read my novels) (hee hee) are naturally passionate about things that have captured their interest. Please play nice.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

"My method and theory of art: I have this desk. When I spend a number of hours per day seated at it, I usually end up having written or drawn something. When I don't sit, I don't write or draw because when the writing or drawing comes around, I am fooling with the dogs, talking on the phone, or fixing the stairs. My artistic production is of higher quality than my imagination, skill, or intelligence would suggest, which leads me to believe that those faculties have very little to do with it. I would not a take a million dollars for that desk."

Daniel Manus Pinkwater.

"I write every day for at least two hours, and I spend the rest of my time largely in the society of ducks."

Flannery O'Connor.

"Throw the lumber over, man! Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing."

Jerome K. Jerome.

"I am first and foremost a teller of tales, but I am also a serious-minded woman who accepts the responsibilities of her job, and that job, if I am to be true to what is in me, is to say with every voice at my command: 'We must love and imitate the beautiful and the good.'"

Mary Stewart.
